New York hotels?

I'm feeling a sudden and urgent need for a mini vacation in New York. Any recommendations for cheap - but not downright dirty, thanks - hotels would be extremely appriciated.

What is your budget?

When I visited Manhattan 2000 I stayed at http://www.heraldsquarehotel.com - good location, not too expensive, nice personnel.

On my 2006 visit I rented an apartment I found at http://newyork.craigslist.org - even better.

Radio City Apartments?

How cool! I'm going to be in New York in early June for a couple of days - cannot wait!!

Andreas - the cheaper we can live, the more fun the shopping will be! :) Thanks for your tips!

Malin, tack för det! Jag kollar!

Pille, how fun!! We don't have any definite plans at all, but I'm leaning towards a girls' getaway with one of my friends, with tons of shopping, eating and Starbucks-ing.

Pfft. Forget New York, you should come to SoCal. We have the weather, we have the beach and we have asparagus in season!

Hi!

I'd suggest the Chelsea Lodge. The rooms are small, but it's cheap and cheerful. They also have suites that are larger, but still great value for money.

And they usually get good reviews on Tripadvisor:

Hi Anne!

Brad and I have tried several times to book the Chelsea Lodge, but they're always full! (No doubt a good sign, definitely worth a try.) Our last visit (in '04) we stayed with friends in Jersey and a few days at the Y uptown. We were seeing operas at the Met and the Y is within spitting distance. Enh... What can I say, it was the Y, but it was cheep ($66 a night in an amazing location!) Have a lot of fun wherever you stay! We're heading to Rome and Tuscany next month!

Ciao bella!

Jeff

I live in NYC, and when we have more people visiting than we can possibly host or parcel out to friends, I suggest they stay at the Super 8 Hotel in Times Square. My parents have even stayed there (mostly when they know the party will be going on well past when they want to head to bed! *smile*)and liked it. Super 8 is a notoriously cheap motel chain in the states, and when this one opened up and was so 'fancy' compared to the normal Super 8, it caused quite a sensation.

I was in NY in February and stayed at 414 Hotel, http://www.hotel414.com/ which I found good value for money.

I also tried Chelsea Lodge as my first port of call but they were full. Radio City Apartments were another option I was very keen on, but in the end we went with the Cosmopolitan Hotel because we wanted to be in funky Tribeca. It was very reasonable for NYC and the rooms were big by European standards and very clean, if not inspiring. Our room faced.. well, a wall but was very quiet so we got a good night's sleep every night. There were rooms facing the intersection but I'm guessing they would be noisy. No on-site restaurant but who needs it - you're in New York! We found it to be a great base for exploring, especially with the subway station literally outside the door.

Forgot to mention - it's also within walking distance of the Brooklyn Bridge, Battery Park and the fabulous discount designer store Century 21!!
