Rice Krispie Treats
I don't know if I've made rice krispie treats before - I think so, but I can't remember for sure. I do know that I definitely didn't have it as a child though. It's not a popular treat here, most people have never heard of it at all. I must have encountered it on my year as an exchange student in California, and like so many other American snacks, I fell in love.
I had just bought a fresh box of rice krispies for Ywette's birthday cake (yes - it has rice krispies!) and figured I'd use up some of them making treats. I followed the original recipe, except that I added some chopped up salted peanuts. I would have drizzled them with chocolate had I not been a bit stressed out - anyway, it would probably have melted, it was a very hot day.
They'll keep for a few days in a box or covered in plastic wrap. If you can keep your fingers off them, that is...
Rice Krispie Treats
makes 24
3 tbsp butter
300 g (10 oz) fresh marshmallows
1,5 litre (6 cups) rice krispies
100 ml (0,4 cups, but don't be fussy here) salted peanuts, coarsely chopped
Melt the butter in a large non-stick pan. Add the marshmallows and stir on low heat until they are completely melted. Add the rice krispies, and peanuts if using. Stir to coat well, then press into an oiled pan. (I can't stress the oiled part enough - mine was NOT, as I figured non-stick was good enough, and it was quite a struggle to get them out.) Leave to cool off for a bit, then turn out and cut into pieces. Decorate with melted chocolate if you feel up to it.

I have never tried Rice Krispie Treats with peanuts before...I will definitely have to try that!
This is huge where I live. It's one of the main things kids will bring to school as a treat for the class.

We make them here by mixing the rice crispies in melted chocolate and spooning into cake cake cases. My mum always put raisins in them as well and sometimes she would make them with cereal cornflakes instead of rice crispies.
These are great treats for kids and grown ups alike. I have been making these for years and they never disappoint me. Yum!
These are a real genre of their own -- with a long history. I never had them as a child but my partner did and loves them so I oncein a while make them.Nothng like them. Wow. Sugar high hello.
