Corn dogs

Untitled

Corn dogs is one of those mysterious foods that I'd never had an opportunity to try. I've seen them on TV, but I've never been anywhere that actually serves them. Solution? Make your own! It was pretty easy - I used this recipe from Homesick Texan and Wienerkorv from Scan's new canola-fed pigs, cut into three pieces each to make little mini-dogs.

I ended up frying them in a deep pan on the stove, rather than in our deep fryer - they stuck to the fryer basket and I couldn't figure out how to make them.. well, not do that.

So were they good? Well, so-so. I won't make them again, but now they're definitely out of my system. And it was fun to try!

I think corn dogs are best enjoyed while walking around at a carnival or fair! :) No festival gathering over here in the USA is complete without a corn dog vendor. They are a BIG part of summer childhood memories. It's been a while since I've had a corn dog... seeing your post has given me a craving for one! I wonder when the next carnival is coming to town?! heehee :)

Corn dogs are on almost every restaurants 'Kids Menu' over here, too. So kids really have access to this 'food on a stick' whenever they want. When we go out to eat, my son uses the stick as a sword when he is done eating his corn dog. I've seen lots of other boys do the same thing... must be a boy thing. :)

In Minnesota we argue the merits of corn dog versus pronto pup. Corn dogs are sweeter and made with corn meal, while pronto pups have a wheat based batter. Our State Fair is two weeks away, and we'll fill up on wieners-on-a-stick of every variety. But corn dogs are my first love and to them I'll return every year.

So funny to have you post about corn dogs! I've had two of them this week--one at an amusement park and one at the coast. I like them for a rare, on the go, fair/festival type treat and our grandkids seemed to enjoy them too. Today? Mexican food--yummy!
Blessings,
Aimee
PS: Patrice--I had always assumed pronto pups and corn dogs were the same. Thanks for educating me on the difference:)

I love corndogs! I don't eat them often, but at least a few times a year. I haven't tried this recipe but to me it is like a cornmeal pancake wrapped around a hot dog. A really good combination. The deli in any American supermarket will usually have them as well as family restaraunts. I hope you get a chance to try a "premade" one sometime.

Nice to know how to make them since I don't eat beef and corn dog was one of my favorite food before I quit beef, I can make it with any meat I like!

I think they taste the best at fair ground with beer or lemonade!
