Basil Meatballs in Tomato Sauce

basil meatballs in tomato sauce

I mostly make my food from scratch, and shy away from unnecessary additives in food. (Well, mostly.) However, I'm pretty fond of Dolmio organic pasta sauce. We got a jar in one of the grocery service deliveries we tried out this spring, and it was surprisingly good. And with a decent ingredient list, too. We've bought it a few times since, and one of those times, we made this pretty awesome dinner.

My husband remarked how we should make our own tomato sauce and freeze - and yes, we should indeed, now that tomatoes are in season. Any favorite recipes?

Basil Meatballs in Tomato Sauce

400 g pork mince
1 onion
1 garlic clove
bunch of basil
1 egg
1-2 tbsp breadcrumbs
salt, black pepper

1 jar ready-made tomato sauce (or, obviously, home made. We like Dolmio Organic a lot.)
1-200 ml milk

Finely mince the onion, garlic and chop the basil. Mix with the pork mince, the egg and the breadcrumbs. Season with salt and pepper. Roll into pretty little meatballs.

Bring the tomato sauce to a boil, and thin it out with a little milk. While it's simmering (but not violently boiling), drop in the meatballs. Some will fall apart as you stir, but that's ok. Keep simmering until the meatballs are cooked through - perhaps ten minutes?

Serve with pasta, and plenty of parmesan.
