Waffle day!
It's that time of year again... Swedes love celebrating food-related "holidays" - such as Shrove Tuesday (semlor), or Cinnamon Bun Day. Waffle Day actually started as a linguistic misunderstanding - it's Lady Day today (that is, nine months before Jesus was born so.. well, let's not go into details) and in Swedish that's called "Vårfrudagen". That was quickly transformed into "Våffeldagen" which sounds somewhat similar - and *that* is why everyone eat waffles today.
Which Swedes normally don't do very often, by the way. It's definitely not a breakfast food here. I never eat it except for this day, and then I like them with jam and whipped cream. That's what we're having for dinner tonight...

I love waffles and i too have never had them for breakfast, here it is something eaten for afternoon coffee or tea.
This waffle looks very yummy;)
They're used as fast food here, but with sour cream and finely chopped onions at night. A desert waffle with maple syrup too. Won't be having any tonight though. Go figure.
here, as in in my household
Hmm, märkligt, jag bloggade också just om våfflor. *fniss* Och jag har redan ätit mina. ^^
My kids eat waffles almost everyday for breakfast. I have one that likes them plain with syrup, one that likes blueberries in it and topped with confectionary sugar, one that likes chocolate chips with confectionary sugar, and one that likes them plain topped with apple pie filling. But when mom is in a hurry they eat them however I make them. Take Care :)
Swedes love celebrating food-related "holidays"... I must have been Swedish in another life! ;-)
I can't BELIEVE I didn't have any waffles yesterday. I just isn't right. I don't deserve to be swedish.
You only eat waffles one day a year?
- You poor thing!
Luckily in Norway waffles are eaten almost weekly ;)
We were talking about having waffles for saturday breakfast, but agreed on pancakes instead. They are easier and faster to make and you can pile them up and eat them together with the rest of the family. Waffles, I think, have to go straight from the waffle iron to the plate.
Have a really nice weekend!
Katrin, that's totally true. It's a hassle to make them...
The food-related day that is catching on here in the US is Pi Day. March 14th is written as 3/14 here or 3-14 or 3.14. 3.14 is the beginning of Pi, so 14 March is Pi Day and we celebrate by eating pie. True, this holiday is largely celebrated by engineers and mathematicians so far, but it's gaining in popularity because who can resist pie?
The sour cream waffles from The Joy of Cooking are a fair amount of work but worth every bit. I spoiled my kids years ago and as teenagers they still beg for them especially with local fresh strawberries
