Lentil-fried Fish

lentilfriedfish

Are you looking for something different to make with fish? Try finely crushing red lentils (a food processor comes in very hand) and use it to coat a firm piece of filleted fish that's been lightly salted and peppered. Fry in butter or oil until the fish is cooked through and the lentils are quite crispy. Absolutely delicious! And, I suppose, a fairly low-carb way of breading without actually using bread! (Not that that's a particular goal for me - I just like the variation.)

The salad we had with it is from American Masala, and it's a delicious sort of slaw with lime, chili, fresh ginger, peanuts and coriander. I'll tell you more about it in a separate post, I promise!

What a lovely idea! I don't care about low-carb, but I do have a gluten allergy, so finding a non-wheat alternative for "breading" is always a nice surprise.

Wow...great idea! I have some lentils in the pantry just waiting to be used. :) Since I don't like fish (though I wish I did), I think I'll try it on some chicken instead. Sounds delicious! Thanks for posting!

Interesting! How different is the flavor from normal breading?

Great tip. I have been also using grated cheese as a substitute breading for chicken and fish. I have to try this.

That really looks yummy, Anne. We'll definitely try it. The slaw looks really good, too!

Cheers!

Suvir, oh, thanks for commenting! Indeed, I *loved* the slaw! We made it three times in a few weeks, and I have a post prepared about just the slaw. It's incredibly tasty! :)

Oy oy oy... I thought I'd try this for dinner last night. By red lentils, I'm assuming you mean röda linser. In a box. Dried.

But when I put them in the food processor and processed and processed and processed... pretty much nothing happened. They didn't break down at all.

Was I using the wrong food or maybe the wrong attachment on my fd? Although I couldn't find any better attachment.

Hasse wondered if he should use the pestal (sp?) but that seemed like a lot of work...

Your thoughts?

I meant "fp" for food processor, of course. And, btw, I just went ahead and fried in some olive oil and butter and they were delish. :) But I still want to try with the lentils.

Nikki, how strange! I used a mini processor - the kind that attaches to a handheld mixer, but I wouldn't have guessed that size made a difference. I haven't tried it in my big food processor though, but.. it should work! How strange!
