In the Pink

Emily at La Dolce Vita has asked us food bloggers to cook up something pink this weekend, to help with breast cancer awareness. We were also encouraged to take pictures of ourselves wearing pink. See the end of this post.

Anyway. I tried two pink dishes. The first is Pink Piccante Prawns, from Nigella's Feast. Success? No. Not really. And it's not that pink either. I won't be making this again. The flavors just didn't work very well together, for me. Per liked it more.

But the other dish - yumminess! The picture shows strawberry ice cream with white chocolate ripple, and this is something I really encourage you to make. The recipe is from Elisabeth Johansson's Iskallt! - an excellent book if you like ice creams. This is the first recipe I'm trying, and I like it a lot. I wish I had had time to let the ice cream custard cool over night - I had to rush it a bit - but it turned out fine anyway. And it certainly is pink - albeit fairly pale pink. Picture shows it a bit melty - sorry about that.

Strawberry ice cream with white chocolate ripple

1 vanilla bean
350 ml milk
400 ml cream
6 egg yolks
150 ml sugar
100 ml good quality strawberry jam (I used homemade)

For the chocolate ripple
100 white chocolate, chopped up
75 ml cream

Halve and scrape out the vanilla bean into a pot. Add milk, cream and the entire bean, and bring to a boil. Set aside. Beat the sugar and the egg yolks until pale and fluffy. Mix with the cream mixture, and add back into the pot. Bring up to simmering - do NOT let it boil. Run through a sieve, and let it cool - preferrably over night.

For the ripple, simply bring the cream to a boil, add to the chopped chocolate and mix until smooth. Let it cool in room temperature.

When it's very cool, add the strawberry jam, and run in an ice cream machine until your preferred texture. When it's done, add the chocolate ripple, and place in the freezer for a couple of hours. Enjoy!

And just for some more enjoyment, and some more pinkness - here's a picture of me, in pink. :)

You have the most beautiful red hair! I only have a close relationship with my colorist! I was blessed with icky mouse brown that requires mucho highlighting! My dad was a redhead and I hear it skipps generations, maybe I will have little redheads one day!

Awww, thank you :) It's all natural - I was born with the exact same color, and it hasn't changed at all. I've gone through periods when I've absolutely hated it - but I love it now. And you're absolutely right, it can skip generations and mutate wildly (I'm the first in my family to have red hair!) but you better make sure your spouse carries red too.

I was planning to do something for this event, but as with many other things time just flew away...

I still havn't bought the book Iskallt, neither have I tried the recipes from it that were in Allt om mat and Aftonbladet. But I will :-)

The photo of you is really beautiful!

Dagmar - I totally ran out and bought it, couldn't help myself. It does seem lovely. Let me know if you want any recipes from it, I'll be happy to send them on. :) And thank you. I'm never happy with pics of myself (is anyone?) but I'm trying ;) It's a bit like therapy!

Hmm, that ice cream sounds and looks great! That pink prawn recipe came to my mind too, but obviously good that I ended up with something else. Cute picture of you! By the way, you are listed among my favorites if you don't mind (sorry, my blog is in Hungarian..)

Who doesn't like ice cream? Even melty it still looks super yummy!

Surprise--I thought the picture was of the prawns...quite a paradigm shift when I discovered it was the ice cream. And don't worry about the meltiness..I have been known to stick my ice cream in the microwave to achieve the perfect melted quality...

Hi Anne!

I'm always on the lookout for good ice cream recipes, so I'm going to have to remember to try this one out. This one certainly sounds delicious...and looks good even when melty, which is a big plus!

Thanks for participating.

Oh Anne, the ice cream looks yummy! However, your picture is going to eclipse any recipe accompanying it! What a beautiful picture of you! And a self portrait I believe.

Not to diminish the importance of your recipe though. I love the idea of strawberry ice cream with a wite chocolate ribbon. A great summertime dessert!

Chronicler, you're making me blush :)

I can now happily report that the ice-cream is holding up really well in the freezer. It's still soft and creamy. Yum!
