Shrimp Chips

shrimpchips

The guy at the store called these "elephant nails". Charming. But that's really what they look like, pre-frying.

I'd only tried these ready-made, sometimes in Chinese or Indian restaurants, and I think I bought a bag a few years ago in Holland. This was the first time I fried them myself though, and though the flavor is much the same, it's a lot of fun. The little hard shards will expand to the fluffy chips you see in the picture. And they're mighty tasty, too!

I got my bag at FineFood, but I'm sure you can find them in many Chinese or Asian supermarkets, too. Or apparently you can make them from scratch.

Oh, I used to love these...

Just to let you know that we made the Mango mousse and it turned out delicious. We did omit the gelatine. The meaty smell that was coming off it was enough to make me gag, NO WAY was I going to put that in my delicate mango mixture. So it didn't set, but it gloriously light and fluffy, very tasty and firm enough.

Prawn crackers!! Aw, haven't made those in a while. As it happens I can verify that you bought a bag in Holland since I was there with you. I also know that you bought a bag of gummibears for your husband on the boat going back to Sweden ; )

Love the blog! Inspiring to say the least.

Love, Anna : )

delicious! We call them prawn crackers too and they do look like giant toe nails before cooked! They are very moreish and delicious with a fruity, spicy sauce!

Waspgoddess - ooh, glad to hear it worked ok without gelatin too!

Peanut - that was the word I needed, of course, prawn crackers. And hey, what a memory you have! I did buy gummi bears.. wow, I'm so nice. And yeay, I love your blog, so glad to "read" you again :)

Freya - a fruity spicy sauce sounds like it'd be great, any recipe for one? :)

deleted last post due to typo, here it is corrected:
I still have fond memories of the exclamations and excitement when I brought them to a Puerto Rican baby shower and fried them up. They had never seen anything like the magic of the shrimp chips, and I think a lot of them ran right out to buy them the next day. It was a lot of fun!

you can actually cook them in the microwave!! (without oil..) put like sized small pieces into the microwave, and you have to keep a close watch on them cos they will 'harden' very quickly if you leave them in for too long! they taste as good actually! worth a try just to see that you can acutally cook them in the mircowave! My health concious auntie taught me this.

Here's how to make delicious chocolate covered strawberries. First of all ensure that the strawberries you are intending to use are dry, then allow them to be room temperature warm prior to making them. After the strawberries have been covered in chocolate, put them in your refrigerator to cool, but do not store them in the fridge. Consume within 1-2 days.
