Mexican fast-food in Stockholm!

serrano3

I've been wanting a good mexican fast-food place in Sweden for a very long time. In fact, ever since I was introduced to Taco Bell in California. (Yes, yes, I know it might not be a particular "good" fast-food place but hey, I like it.) Sweden does however have Taco Bar, and that's all. And that sucks. Their food is just... not good. At all.

serrano4

So. Imagine my delight when I got an e-mail from Einar Örn Einarsson, an Icelander now starting up Serrano in Stockholm. Serrano is a fast-food concept from Iceland, which is very successful there, and they just opened the first Swedish restaurant in Vällingby which is one of the Stockholm suburbs.

I haven't been able to go yet, but I promise to tell you as soon as I do. Einar has given me a bunch of free coupons though, and I'd love to share them with you - so, if you want to go eat at Serrano, just leave a comment below (making sure you have a valid e-mail address, or I won't be able to contact you for your address) and the first ten of you to do so will each reciece two coupons each, good for a burrito or a quesadilla off the menu.

Åh! Åh! I Vällingby?! Där jag bor?! :D Jösses vad nyfiken jag blir!

It's too bad you don't have Chipotle there. SOOO good! Way better than Taco Bell has ever been.

Oh Serranos sounds awesome. I'd love to try it.

Hi Anne!
I love your blog!
I like Taco Bell, but I can't really call it Mexican food at all.
Have you ever thought of making delicious Mexican food at home? If so, then you should take a peek at my blog . . .
:)

La Traductora - absolutely, I do it all the time :) Still, it'd be nice with a good alternative to McDonalds every now and then.. :)

I'd be glad to try it! As a Californian Mexican-food snob, I'm suspicious, but I'll make the trip to the 'burbs to try something new. Joelpf (at) gmail.

Om jag räknat rätt så kanske det finns några kuponger kvar?! Om så är fallet skulle det vara superskoj att testa, för jag håller med Taco Bar är allt annat än gott...

Hej Anne!
I'm late for the coupons, but...great blog anyway! And I was wondering, do they have vegetarian choices at Serrano? In that case, I'd love to try it even without coupons! ;)

Anne said...

Marta, I only know what's on the website, but it looks like they have some veggie options :)

Einar Örn said...

Hi, I'm Einar, the CEO of Serrano.

Just to answer Marta's question. Yes, we have plenty of vegetarian options. Basically you can order a vegetarian burrito or quesadilla, and then you select exactly what you want included. You can select from a variety of rice, beans, vegetables, fresh salsas, guacamole, cheese, sour cream and more. Every item is labeled if it's fit for vegans and vegetarians.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, feel free to email me at einar@serrano.nu. We have just started in Sweden, and we know that there's always room for improvement, so we love to hear from people.

Next time you guys are out here I'll introduce you to some yummy authentic Mexican food. I agree with liking Taco Bell and who cares if it is not authentic - it's yummy and cheap!

Do you remember during the water festival when I was out there the Mexican booth? I can still remember the blond Swedish guys with the sombreros ans panchos cooking some "Mexican inspired" foods. I hope the resturaunt is better than that ;-)

Anne said...

Tesse, I know... but we'll have to make a little trip out of it some day :) I hear the new shopping centre is pretty good.

Rebecca - I totally do remember that! And in fact, I just told that story to someone the other day. We were talking about the Swedish taco fascination, and I remembered how amused you were by the blonde taco boys :)

You know, the chances of our getting to Stockholm are vanishingly small, so don't throw me in for the coupons. I just must say, though: I really hope that you have GOOD Mexican food there!

Having grown up in Southern California & spent quite a bit of time in Mexico, I given up on the idea of it, here in Europe. Truly - it's just not worth it. Call it Mexican-inspired Spanish/French food or something, but it certainly isn't anywhere close to authentic.

Maybe you'll get lucky?

Oh vad trevligt det låter. Finns det någon kupong kvar tar jag gärna den!

I'd take some coupons for Serrano in Iceland ;). I'm a long time reader of your blog and I was intrigued to read about Serrano in Sweden. Iceland strikes back quickly!
Greetings from Reykjavík.

Anne said...

Daniel - does that mean you've tried it? :) Is it good? What should I order when I visit? :)

Stefán said...

Hi my name is Stefán Már and I'm from Iceland and I'm a frequent visitor at Serranos and like it alot as all of my friends do. It's really good and looks and tastes alot better than Subway, BK, MCD and other simular restaurants.
I always get the fajitas burrito or the spicy cajon burrito(:O).
I usually pay around 900-1000 Icel. kr. for a burrito and a soda and it doesn't hurt that I have a discount card from my school :D:D

Please, please, please, someone tell me a place in Stockholm that I can buy corn tortillas, I don't care if they are frozen. There was a place in Gamla Stan that sold souvenirs from Mexico, and they kept some frozen corn tortillas in a freezer in the back room. Unfortunately they have closed, and I have been in withdrawal ever since.

Can anyone help an SoCal expat in need of a taco?

Rumour has it that one of the places in Hötorgshallen might have it. I haven't tried for myself, but.. maybe? I think it's the shop furthest in the back to the left, as you come down the escalator.

Another option is to talk to LaNeta, I think they make their own. http://www.laneta.se/

David said...

Yes, La Neta (close to Hötorget) makes their own corn tortillas and sells them fresh.

I'm from Mexico and I can tell you the tortillas they sell are as good as the ones you find in Mexico.

Anne said...

La Neta is great - I really want to go there again soon.

Roger and Maria said...

thank you SOOOOOOOOO much. I did find some frozen corn torillas at Hötorget, but they are not the best quality. I will be going to La Netta very soon, great news.
