Star Cookies
I made these simple but beautiful cookies for my mom's birthday. I used the sugar cookie dough from Nigella's book "How to be a Domestic goddess", made double stars using a special cutter, and filled the holes with crushed boiled sweets. (I had a bag of Fox's Glacier Fruits, divided by color.) Simple as that! And I think they turned out great! The fruity center really flavors the cookie, and makes what is otherwise quite plain into something special.
(The original plan was to do hearts, and remove "70" from the middle, but that proved to be way harder and indeed quite impossible.)

What exactly was it that you put in the center. Any idea if it is available in the US? We get these cookies at IKEA that have a red sticky fruity center like that - my whole family just loves them

Boiled sweets are hard - like lifesavers. What you had at Ikea was most likely a "syltgrotta" - a shortbread-like cookie rather than a butter cookie, with jam in the middle. Like this:

Cookies are great - but aren't we all supposed to be trying hard to lose weight at this time of year? :p
Scott, oh, I don't know! I actually continued my weightloss over the holidays so.. I think I can have a cookie. :) (Although these were actually baked a while ago, just didn't get around to blog about them earlier.)
I love your cookies. We used to bake them at Christmas when I was a child and we called them stain glass window cookies as light shines through them when you hold them near a candle.
They look very cute. I was planning on doing cookies in this way with hard sweets in the center, but I never had the time before Christmas.
