Red Espresso

redespresso

I was approached a while ago by a salesman who wanted to send me a sample of a new product that's launching in Sweden this fall: red espresso. Huh? What's that? Well, it's tea. Roobios tea, red tea, that you make the same way you would espresso. (In an espresso machine, or possibly in a moka pot on the stove.) Interesting concept. I tried it this morning, in a moka pot. And my impressions? Well, I have to say, it does look sort of like espresso. (But red.) It's thicker and more viscous than regular tea. No crema, which I really didn't expect even though the website says you can get it, since I used a moka pot rather than my espresso machine. It smelled pretty bad - very strong and very bitter. I cautiously took a sip - and promptly added sweetener. Another sip, and hey - pretty good stuff! It still smells rather terrible, but the flavor was good. Very smooth and strong.

I'll try it in my espresso machine as well, with some foamed milk to make a tea latte, but I'm not sure it's something I'll love. Fun concept though!

I like (regular) Rooibos, nice and spicy.

And I love espresso.

But, as I like my coffee strong and my tea weak, I'm not sure I'll be trying this one.

This sounds interesting, I must say. I'm a huge rooibos-fan so I will absolutely try this, if I'll find it in a store nearby that is...

I love rooibos tea...fun idea to make it into an espresso!

I love tea. I love the occassional espresso. Why not let tea be tea and espresso espresso, other than the fact that they think that tea is hopelessly un-cool.

To jessica.. I think tea is getting hip again. Like chokolate has become a gourmet-thing, and coffee the same. Only the best of the best and not to mention olive-oil and whisky, you are supposed to KNOW so much. Tea is the next big thing. First flush darjeeling.;)

Bookomaten: right, I fell in love in pai mu tan (white tea) long ago, and went to the most established tea shop in town. They looked at me like I was crazy. Then recently I was in to get my monthly yield and now they had it, in their regular stock, something they six months ago said would never ever happen.
I like black teas more than I do roiboos. If this comes my way and it is not overwhelmed with hip-factor I might try it. I don't eat chocolate because it is hip but because I like it. It is the same with tea but I guess that's how it goes.

That's fascinating. I've been drinking rooibos tea for a few years now, and really like its mellow flavour. Never add any sugar or honey:) But I guess 'red espresso' is stronger than my rooibos infusion :)

Rooibos tea originally was grown and manufactured in my country South Africa but seems to have become a world wide phenomenon these days. I drink only Rooibos Tea and recently at a local coffee shop was introduced to Red Latte. It was delicious and I finally have something hip & happening to drink when my friends order their cappuccinos or lattes & espressos. I was really thrilled to be introduced to it. You all should really give it a try.

It is great to see people in Scandinavia are getting interested in Red Espresso. I hope someone in Norway also will pick up on this new café trend and not just Sweden. Great Drink!
